In the
coming decades, Afghanistan will become an important point between the two
newfound economies.
A bridge between Central Asia and
South Asia, which undoubtedly
will brings transformation in the region.
The Shanghai
Cooperation Organization might add Afghanistan as a new member in their
populations in the near future.
China is
trying to build new transport routes through Afghanistan by huge investments in
important ports in Pakistan and Afghanistan. And it will be easier to trade
with Central Asia, Iran, the Middle East and Europe, also China will effort in
the near future, to supply its needed energy from Turkmenistan to China via
Afghanistan, by oil and gas pipeline.
Investing $
500 million of India at the Chabahar port of Iran will enable India to exchange
its trade products with Central Asian countries through Afghanistan in the
future.
If these
countries are linked by railways, transit ways and pipe lines through
Afghanistan, this country will receive hundreds of millions of dollars annually
for transit revenue. Also, the field of work for the people of the country and
the attraction of foreign investors in the country will be provided.
1 – (TAPI) natural gas transportation project.
The Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan & India (TAPI) project was
planned in 1990 and opened in 2016 by leaders of four mentioned countries.
This 1814-kilometer pipeline transfers Turkmen gas through Afghanistan to
Pakistan and India. The first figures show that the project will bring about 33
billion cubic meters of Turkmen gas to Afghanistan, Pakistan and India each
year.
The total cost of the project is $ 22.5 billion, which is being paid by the
World Bank and the Asian Development Bank.
Exploitation from the TAPI project, Afghanistan annually will receive more
than $ 400- $ 500 Million fees and taxes from gas transit, in addition to using
its gas sufficiently.
According to statistics, Afghanistan receives annual, 500 million cubic
meters gas from this project in the first ten years, in the second 10
years 1 billion cubic meters, and in the third 10 years it will reach up to 1.5
billion cubic meters.
Another project that will be implemented along the gas pipeline is the
railway line connecting Pakistan and Turkmenistan through Afghanistan, as well
as the transmission of Turkmenistan's power line to Pakistan through
Afghanistan.
2 – KASA 1000 (The Central Asia-South Asia power project)
KASA is the project name, which is the export 1000 MW of surplus
electricity from Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan to Pakistan and Afghanistan
(Pakistan: 700 Megawatts, Afghanistan: 300 Megawatts).
This project is the most important project is regional energy integration,
which includes the export of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan hydropower to
Afghanistan and Pakistan, which can be called an energy bridge between Central
and South Asia.
This project planned on 2006 and 2007, in Economic Cooperation Conference,
and will be completed over the next few years, which will brighten thousands of
homes in Afghanistan and Pakistan from electricity light, and reactivates
decades of companies, that have been stopped due to insufficient electricity.
the CASA 1000 project will transport, 1300 megawatts of electricity of
Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan through 1250 km long transmission lines to
Afghanistan and then to Pakistan.
The cost of this project is estimated at $ 1.017 billion, and the World
Bank, US and UK governments, the European Investment Bank and the Islamic
Development Bank have promised to pay this.
According to the agreement between Afghanistan and Pakistan, Afghanistan
will receive $1.25 per Megawatt as transit fee from Pakistan for exporting
electricity of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan to Pakistan, According to this
calculation, Pakistan will pay $45 million annually to Afghanistan.
3 – TUTAP (Exporting electricity from Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and
Tajikistan to Pakistan through Afghanistan.).
The TUTAP project is scheduled for export of 500 megawatts electricity from
Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan countries to Pakistan via Afghanistan.
This project connects important Central Asian countries to South Asia,
through this power line.
If this project is implemented, it will start from the province of Faryab,
passing through central provinces of
Afghanistan, such as Samangan, Baghlan, Bamyan, Ghor, Wardak, Daikundi,
and finally ends in Kandahar then enter to Pakistan.
The mentioned provinces also benefit from light of electricity, and
Afghanistan will receive tens of millions dollars annually from Pakistan as
transit fee. In addition, this project will opens door for two large mines,
coal mine in Darahi-Soof of Samangan province & Hajigag iron mine in Bamyan
Province, which has not yet been used as technical, due to insufficient
electricity and modern roads.
